Multicultural Town(Historical Site)
Being an artery of economic in the Northern Taiwan, Danshui River was a precious treasure worth fights in eye of colonizers. Especially, Danshui as a connection of Danshui River and the Taiwan Strait plays vital roles in trades, military, immigration, economics, and even life. It is like a powerful magnet attracting colonies ranging from Spanish, Dutch, Japan to Han Chinese governing Taiwan now. Interestingly, vivid commerce, series of battles and effect from different colonizers shape Danshi into a colorful multicultural fishing town in fascinating environment. Visit Fort San Domingo(紅毛城) with façade of red bricks and date back to 1640s when Dutch colonized Taiwan. Go through Oxford collage, Danshui Church, Huwei Machay Hospital and also the sacrificed great life of Reverend Mackay who performed religious service, medical practice and teaching. Or ahead to Tamshui Longshan Temple and Yinshan Temple to appreciate intricate architectures and figure out why locals are faithful to Maztu. Moreover, you can find Western-style buildings invisibly dotted on Old Streets or lanes telling stories from long time ago.
Fun and Romance
Walking from Danshui MRT Station, along Danshui River to the north, you are greeted by lots of stalls, venders, restaurants, coffee shops, stores ranging from selling food such as roasted squids, plum juice, ice cream as tall as your arm (not kidding, try it), iron egg(with iron-liked texture and sweat egg inside, one of famous snacks in Danshui ), shrimp cookies, etc to Chinese Toys to various little games like archery (target is water balls), throwing circles, shooting, etc. It is veritable exciting and interesting to toss Old Street with friends slowly. When you feel tired, have sits along promenade facing shining river with several colorful boats flatting. At sunset, mountains stretch to endless, several boats swing on gold river, lights of yellow, orange and red load on far sea and breeze bring salty smell and soft sound of river, forming one of Top 10 fascinating sceneries in Taiwan. What a romantic spot for lovers!
Ferries and Bicycles
After having a big meal in Old Street, you may want some exercise. Just take ferry to another bank of river, rent a bike (around NT50/hour) and start to enjoy relaxing atmosphere in Left Bank Park! If you have enough time and will be curious about museum displaying prehistory of Danshui, you can ride through bicycle trails 4.2 kilometers long paved along mangrove forest with rich biological resource to “Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology.”
Or you can take ferry to Fishermen Wharf, a place full of music, aroma of coffee, sea breeze, laugh of people, marvelous sceneries and Couple Bridge. It is indeed a relaxation to sit on bridge with coffee, appreciating sun going down below horizons. Or have a beer with friends, listen to charming songs and enjoy picturesque night views of Left Bank Park—colorful lights link together and shine in river at the same time, seeming like two necklaces of mountains.

Public Transportation
To Old Street
Take red line(Danshui Line) ahead to Danshui Station and get off at Danshui Station. Find Danshui river, follow promenade to north, and you will arrive crowed Old Street. For more info, try: http://english.trtc.com.tw
To Fishermen Wharf:
One can take ferries and also bus. Bus Station is right at the southeast part of Danshui MRT station. And take Red 26 available from 5:40 to 24:40.
Ferry information:
How to take ferry? Walk through old Street(Zongzheng Rd.) and you find a white architecture with ticketing windows. Buy tickets and wait in lines at the place where ferry will stay.
